Managing Work Stress

Stress at work is one of the main reasons that a person might seek counseling. Stressful situations and stressful relationships at work can impact your life on many levels. Often what seems like depression or anxiety is really caused by issues on the job. After all, if you are dreading going to work every day, it’s going to spill over to your relationships at home and your mood away from work.

Dr. Smith spent over 15 years as an employee assistance consultant to some of the leading employers in East Tennessee. He specializes in helping people manage work related problems.

It is usually not the job itself that causes work stress. The stress usually comes from people, relationships and the “politics” at work. Fortunately, there are usually “people” problems and there are skills and technique you can learn to help you manage, change or learn to cope with difficult people at work.

What we say to ourselves and how we think about problems at work is really what causes the stress. After all, even the worst supervisor or co-worker can’t physically cause your blood pressure to rise or your anxiety level to go up. You do most of that yourself by dwelling on the problem, thinking about that person when you are at home and focusing on the negative side of the situation. Psychological counseling is one of the best ways to manage that.

Dr. Smith has coached hundreds of people on ways to approach, talk to and even change the behavior of a difficult person. This can seem like an impossible task, but often there are ways to reach a mutual understanding and reduce the stress between people at work.

Sometimes we are surprised to find out that we are playing a part in a stressful situation at work. Counseling can help you look at your own behaviors and your own words so that you can be sure you are part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Finally, work stress can be managed. You are not the only person to experience work stress and help is available. Please call us for a consultation.
